Expectations of Parents
Too often, parents create their own problems by way of having expectations of their children that are not in tune with the child's abilities or desires. These expectations, then, become problematic because the children don't perform to the level the parent is expecting and the parent then becomes disappointed or angry. The child also can become frustrated or upset and the whole issue turns into a lose-lose situation. Not many children can be molded to perform the way, say, Tiger Woods was by his father. Maybe the end result justifies the means, but I wonder... A more suitable approach for parents to follow would be to guide their children in a direction in sync with the child's desires or motivations. Also, parents need to learn not to become alarmed if their children don't seem to be headed in any direction, whatsoever. After all, many young adults that attend college change their majors several times before they finally find something that they find suitable. As difficult as it might be, parents needs to exercise restraint, but at the same time be encouraging without being pushy and demanding. And, under no circumstances should a parent ever put their child down as that is just courting disaster. More parenting advice can be found on our website. |
